Technology in the Classroom - Here is why the research matters

Let me share something with you.

Last month a video came across my feed, a clip from a conference speech titled: Why Technology in Schools Is A Catastrophe. The message was clear. Technology does not belong in the classroom. Handwriting must return to center stage. A neuroscientist's brain scans, the video claimed, show the whole network of the brain lit up like a Christmas tree during handwriting, and dark as a cellar during typing.

Underneath the video, hundreds of comments from educators and parents, all agreeing. Technology is evil. Get it out of schools entirely.

Have you seen this before? A claim this certain, spreading this widely, with almost no room left for nuance.

I will be honest with you. I was frustrated. Not because I think screens are harmless or belong in every classroom without question. I was frustrated because the loudest, most viral version of this conversation left almost no room for the unique brains I have spent nearly 40 years working with, the individuals whose access to learning was being called evil in the comments underneath.

So I did what I always do when something does not sit right. I went looking for the actual research, and I watched the full speech the clip was pulled from.

Here it why it matters: What the full speech actually said.

The 90 second clip that went viral covers two main points. The first is a description of brain scans showing more widespread activity during handwriting than typing. The second is a citation of a study involving 3,000 students taking standardized tests, with the paper based group scoring the equivalent of six months of extra schooling higher than the computer based group.

This is the piece most people miss. The full speech also addresses individuals with disabilities directly, but it matters who is included and who is not. The examples given are individuals with significant, clearly visible disabilities, a speech generating device for a nonverbal child, an eye tracker for a physically impaired child. Technology is framed as genuinely helpful for this group.

Then the speech turns to a different group entirely, individuals with what it calls milder learning needs, and claims they are actually disempowered and made dependent by classroom technology rather than helped by it.

Think about the unique brains you work with. Dyslexia. Dysgraphia. Other learning disabilities. Processing speed challenges. Working memory challenges. Often alongside a higher IQ. These are not mild differences. They are real and significant, even when they do not look like the examples used earlier in the same speech. Framing this group's need for support as dependency, while framing a nonverbal child's need for support as legitimate, draws the line in the wrong place. I want to look more closely at that dependency claim in a future piece in this series, because it speaks directly to who we serve.

Here it why it matters: What the brain research actually measured.

The Christmas tree study referenced in that speech comes from a real 2024 paper published in Frontiers in Psychology. Researchers recorded brain activity in 36 university students, not children, while they handwrote single words with a digital pen, then typed the same words using one finger only. One finger. No two-handed typing, no visual feedback, nothing resembling how anyone actually types.

A formal commentary published in the same journal in 2025 by two researchers, Svetlana Pinet and Marieke Longcamp, raised specific concerns. The protocol never included a learning task, so any conclusion about classroom learning is inferred, not measured. The statistical analysis compared conditions to each other but not connectivity within each condition on its own. One-hand typing does not reflect what actual typing looks like. And no behavioral measures were collected, meaning participants' typing skill was never assessed.

This does not mean the underlying idea, that handwriting engages the brain differently than typing, is wrong. There is genuine research supporting handwriting's role in early literacy and letter recognition. It means this particular study, on its own, cannot carry the weight of the conclusion drawn from it. A study measuring brain connectivity during single word production in adults does not tell us what belongs in a classroom.

Think about the unique brain in front of you.

We do not start with a strategy. We start with the foundation, the whole picture of how a specific individual's brain works, before we ever get to what fits them. That is exactly what gets lost when research gets compressed into a soundbite and amplified by an algorithm that rewards certainty over nuance.

When a message like “technology is evil” circulates widely enough, it stops being an abstract debate. It shapes what gets approved in an IEP meeting. It shapes whether a parent feels comfortable requesting a laptop for their child with dysgraphia. It shapes whether a well meaning educator, trying to do right by everyone in the room, pulls back something a specific individual's brain actually needs, because this month's loudest message says technology is the enemy.

Does this sound familiar? Some individuals genuinely do better with more handwriting, more paper, more of what this speech is describing. Others, including many who were never formally diagnosed with anything, are quietly losing access to their own thinking because the very thing that would let them get their ideas out is being framed as a moral failing, instead of what it actually is, one way of meeting a unique brain where it is.

The research is not here to win an argument. It is here because the individuals in our care deserve better than a conversation shaped by whichever clip travels furthest.
